Budlong Hot Chicken: A Southern Gem in Chicago

Fun fact: I consider myself a pretty good judge in the fried chicken category. After all, I’ve tried far too many (and probably still not enough) brunch plates of chicken and waffles, and can never shy away from a tasty chicken sandwich on a new menu.

What can I say, not only is it crazy delicious, but it also reminds me a little of home in the south!

All that being said, imagine the smiles that came across Eric and I’s faces when we discovered Budlong Hot Chicken, a southern gem in Chicago serving up Nashville-style goodness.

Ok, so a bit of a confession, I had never actually had “hot” chicken, but upon getting a peak of the food, we made quick moves to get inside.

For those new to this game like me, hot chicken is a fried, crispy Nashville specialty that you can get served up with various spice levels – from minimal flame to oh my gosh, give me all the water in the world (veryyy spicy).

The inside of Budlong has a sweet southern flair, from classic white benches to red bandana napkins. It’s small and comforting, with massive windows that fill the whole place with bright light. Oh, and the drinks are served up in mason jars – could you expect anything else?

The menu offers up the option to get your bird sans spice, or you can start with one flame at “Classic” and work your way up to three flames at “X-Hot.” I’m a baby when it comes to spice, so we ordered some naked tenders, the Hot Chicken Sandwich at “Classic”, and a side of mac n’ cheese to share.

Everything was DELICIOUS. Like wowza, probably the best chicken sandwich and tenders I’ve had here in The Windy City, y’all. And like I said, I’ve had a lot of chicken.

The food was juicy, jam-packed with flavor, and totally manageable in spiciness. I’d even be down to go a level up next time! If you’re someone who thrives with spicy food, I’d recommend going for at least “Hot” (two flames).

All the other stuff – from pickles to buns – stood out too. And don’t get us started on that cheesy macaroni. What we quickly learned is that it’s probably impossible to go wrong here!.

Psst! Are these photos pretty or what?? See more of E’s work  here!

A last detail I think worth mentioning, because I’m a sucker for the little things like this – the dishes. I quickly noticed the delicate details on all the plates as soon as we were served. It felt as though I was eating off someone’s special pieces at home!

Now I will say, since having Budlong, Eric and I also had the chance to try the authentic stuff in Nashville. While I know nothing beats the real deal, Budlong really does the job here in Chi with hot chicken that I think could impress those in Tennessee!

If you’re in the city, or visit Chicago, and want a unique, flavorful dish, checking out Budlong Hot Chicken may be your move. Have you already been? If so, let me know what you think!

P.S. Thanks to Benavides Photography for the great photos! In Chicago and looking for lifestyle or engagement photography?? E’s your guy!
